About Space Scotland

Space Scotland began as a shared passion to support Scotland’s space industry, and has only grown since then.

Space
Starts Here.

Space Economy

A commercial space market that makes an annual contribution to the Scottish economy in excess of £4bn.

People

An increase in the workforce by five times the current level. A diverse workforce that is fully reflective of Scottish society and promotes the message that space is open for all.

Leading By Example

A globally recognised strategic location and European leader for commercial space developments.

Upstream Launch

Leveraging Scotland’s position as Europe’s leading small satellite manufacturing location to add a range of managed orbital launch services, horizontal and vertical, to secure the UK’s position as a leading launch nation.

Downstream Data

Supporting the commercialisation of space sourced information from Scotland’s many earth observation and geospatial companies.

Research & Academia

Continuing to encourage engagement between the Scottish space industry and the academic institutions that underpin the sector, while highlighting Scotland’s heritage in contributing to large-scale space missions led by the likes of NASA and the European Space Agency.

The
Sector.

Scotland’s space industry embodies a diverse variety of activities, from pioneering research and development in the Highlands to orbital launches and space exploration in bustling cities. Moreover, Scotland's renowned institutions, such as the University of Edinburgh, and organisations like Astroscale Ltd. are making noteworthy contributions to space science and technology.

Scotland's participation spans the entire value chain, from upstream development to launch processes. With the support of notable educational institutions and organisations, Scotland’s space sector has substantial groundwork for new frontiers in space exploration and discovery.

Scotland builds more small satellites than anywhere in Europe. This capability is a huge strength for the UK and is a result of entreprenerialism, technical expertise in miniturisation of satellites and support from Universities.

Our
Vision.

Space Scotland will secure its role as the voice of the sector across Scotland, a ‘lightning rod’ for the nation’s space interests and the primary ‘gateway’ to signpost those looking to engage. A place where all stakeholders have an equal voice and work together as one to ensure the sector achieves its ambitions, as set out in the Scottish Space Strategy.

Our
Mission.

Harness the views of from the industry’s stakeholder community (“Council”) to enable Scotland’s space industry to surpass its potential, becoming a truly world-class environment for innovative businesses. It will serve as world-leading example and champion for an inclusive and sustainable approach to space operations.

“As home to around a fifth of all space jobs in the UK, Scotland is a vital part of our growing space sector. We have provided funding for Space Scotland because we recognise the important work they are doing to champion space, catalyse investment and create jobs.”

Dr Paul Bate, Chief Executive Officer at UK Space Agency

“Space is absolutely critical for many different reasons, but particularly in tackling the biggest existential threat we all face, the climate crisis. Whether it’s identifying deforestation or methane leaks from oil and gas, the data we get from our satellites is going to be absolutely crucial. The benefit of Scotland’s space sector is the end to end system. We don’t just specialise in one component part, but we have the ability to host the entire ecosystem. Scotland is small enough that we can take a Team Scotland approach - bringing the right people around a table quickly and easily... universities, government and wider society.”

Humza Yousaf MSP, First Minister of Scotland

“I was really amazed at the level of collaboration, openness and the speed at which we could establish a hub in Scotland. I’ve been impressed by the universities and the talent available in scotland and I’m excited about the opportunities.”

Anousheh Ansari, X-Prize CEO and First Female Private Astronaut

“I would say that it is not getting any easier to excite and inspire kids with the same old science lessons and we really need to think carefully and creatively to find ways to do this while covering the required content. One of the main obstacles is resources which are not cheap for schools on tight budgets. The Ambasat Space Satellite Course and kits have certainly inspired my pupils and resulted in them looking forward to their Physics lessons. They are gaining skills, knowledge and hands on experience in a wide range of STEM subjects which not only relate to the curriculum but also the real world of work and all within a topic, Space which most are inherently excited about. I’m sure by the end of this course my pupils will feel a real sense of achievement and will have a greater knowledge of the opportunities that a STEM/Space career could offer them.”

James Anderson, Teacher, Campbeltown Grammar School
